Five Idyllic Campsites in Washington State

If you take delight in the wild places of this world and enjoy hiking, camping and wildlife watching, then surely Washington, on the West Coast of the United States, must rank highly on the list of places you wish to go. Really you are utterly spoiled for choice when it comes to finding a location for pitching a tent in this part of the world, but to give you somewhere to begin, here are five idyllic campsites in this great state:

Ohanapecosh, Mount Rainier National Park

There are three campsites at Mount Rainier National Park, all of which can get rather busy in the summer months and of which this is the least crowded. This campsite is shaded by magical old-growth forest and bisected by a rushing river – what more could you want? There are lovely walks from here to Ohanapecosh hot springs and not far away is the Grove of the Patriarchs where you can see some of the biggest and grandest trees on the planet. It is a good idea, if you plan to stay at any of the Mount Rainier National Park camp sites, to book in advance.

This laid-back waterside campsite is situated extremely picturesquely on a sand spit that encloses a gorgeous lagoon. There are pitches right next to the beach and higher on the bluff. Spencer spit is a lovely place for a stroll. See seals playing or lounging in the sun, as eagles and sea birds soar overhead. Another lovely alternative on the same island is Odlin Country Park, which also has a campsite with beachside pitches.

Kalaloch Campground is set on a spectacular bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, on Olympic Park's wild stretch of coastline. Stairs descend to the beach far below from the campsite and bring you closer to the crashing waves. You can hike along the beach from here in either direction to feel the strength and power of the mighty Pacific. This campsite is popular with fans of 'Twilight' who wish to visit nearby Forks and can fill up, so again, booking ahead is advisable.

This tranquil campsite lies on the banks of Lake Diablo under the dramatic glaciated craggy peaks. Hike from here to the top of the hilariously named Thunder Knob, or take a stroll along the beautiful and melodic Thunder Creek. There is no need to reserve this delightful family campsite, which remains blissfully uncrowded year round. It is open, though not ploughed, in winter.

Takhlakh Lake, Gifford Pinchot National Forest

Mount Adams is so close to this lakeside campsite that you will feel you can reach out and touch it. This campsite is still, silent and peaceful – the perfect place for some gentle canoeing or kayaking, or a spot of trout fishing if that is your cup of tea. Be warned, the road to get here is very rough, but that just adds to the tranquillity of the place, because fewer people make the effort to get to this idyllic spot.
